Teso University
About This Project
Teso is one of few regions in Uganda without a four-year university. In general, university education is expensive and difficult to pursue in Uganda, especially for scholarship students like the ones at Beacon of Hope School and other talented but poor rural students in the area. National scholarships are extremely rare.
Pilgrim has dreamed for some time about providing excellent Christian higher education in the Soroti area, with an aggressive scholarship program. Recently Teso elders approached Pilgrim and contracted to lease us (at a very favorable rate) 1400 acres of land 3 miles north-east of Soroti Town to establish a regional university. Most of the paperwork necessary to acquire a site operating license has already been completed, and we are now raising funds to make this dream a reality.
Together with New York Sun Works: Center for Sustainable Engineering we are pursuing a site plan for a green research campus. We will employ a number of innovative appropriate technologies in a coordinated fashion in campus construction and use, as well as in teaching and research, including solar, passive solar, biodiesel, hydroponics, aquaponics, and vermiculture. We plan to begin construction in early 2009 and to open the doors of Teso University in 2010. We will then have two to three years to become fully accredited.
